If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjgVwlXKux0 This is post 2492 in a continuing series of simple ham radio antennas. Thanks to "SurvivalComms" for this simple, effective 40 meter dipole made from surplus WD-1 field phone wire.  The antenna is easily made from whatever wire you have handy.  Eighteen gauge speaker wire can be used as well. It will only take a few minutes to build this antenna, which then can be placed in your emergency "go-kit". Make one for your home station just in case your regular antenna succumbs to a weather emergency.  With a little luck, you can find usable wire at garage sales, public recycling centers, or even at neighborhood discount stores. Do you have an emergency antenna for your next SOTA or field operation? One never knows when equipment will fail during an "outdoor adventure." In this video from Stuart,KB1HQS, we see how some broken hiking poles can be converted into an emergency 2 meter antenna--not pretty or efficient, but the repurposed poles get the job done. Here are some comments from KB1HQS: In the field you often have to work with what you have on hand. In this video, I build a 2m dipole out of my broken hiking poles. Radials, Radials, Radials (#350)

If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAY_wcz-8Ek This is post 2490 in a continuing series of simple ham radio antennas. Thanks to retired electrical engineer David Casler (KE0OG) for this excellent tutorial on radial ground systems for vertical antennas. Although there are vertical antennas that don't require a radial system (i.e. half-wave verticals), most quarter-wave vertical antennas require a good ground radial or elevated counterpoise system to operate efficiently. David discusses radial systems in a direct, laid-back approach that removes much of the mystery surrounding "the missing half of a vertical antenna." Here are some general comments from David: In response to an Oggie question, we talk about radials for vertical antennas. Subscribe: https://youtube.com/user/davecasler . Here's some experimental antenna fun from Arild Jensen (KM6AKK). The 20 meter full loop antenna fits snugly into a small backyard of a condominium apartment. Multiband performance is possible if the coax feed line is replaced by a "tuner", balun, and balanced feed line. Here are some comments from Arild: Weekend fun setting up a very simple full loop antenna in the back of my condo complex. Thanks to K1 GMN for this compact, inexpensive portable ground plane antenna for the 20 meter Amateur Radio Band.   This easily-assembled antenna system is perfect for "field operations" or in a neighborhood governed by HOAs and CC&Rs. Why not make one of these simple antennas for your emergency "go-kit?" Here are some general comments from K1GMN: Dx'ing using a homebrew 20 mtr gp antenna with a FT857D running between 60-75 watts. This thing works great! UPDATE: The mount has been changed to a 1" pvc tube u-bolted to the stand. Assemble the 102" whip and the 3/4" copper tube and drop it into the tube. Super stable and much stronger. Music by K1GMM ----- Thanks for joining us today. Aloha es 73 de Russ (KH6JRM).

Antenna Comparison For SOTA

If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box. This is post 2486 in a continuing series of simple ham radio antennas. Thanks to Charlie (NJ7V) and Gaston (KT1RUN) for this interesting test of three popular VHF SOTA (Summits on the Air) antennas. Once you finish the video, you'll have an excellent idea which SOTA VHF antenna works best, considering weight, set up procedures, and operating convenience. Here are some general comments from Charlie and Gaston: On this Summits on the Air activation I'm joined by Gaston KT1RUN from TheTechPrepper Youtube Channel. We hopped in his jeep and drove to the base of Blackjack Point, then we hike the short distance to the top. I had previously lined up a few people to help me run some tests (unscientific and unempirical) on the three antennas I use most often for SOTA activations - the 3 element Yagi-Uda, the Roll-up J-Pole and the stock rubber duck. I also check out Gaston's setup, and believe...
