  If you can't attend the ARRL Field Day with your Amateur Radio Club, why not set up your operation in the backyard?  You could run emergency power, string up a few long wires, and bunk for the night with that tent you have stored in the garage. In this video, Tracy ("Outdoors On The Air") does just that and managed to get many contacts without fighting traffic to get to an official ARRL Field Day site.
