Ham Radio-Can an antenna work while laying on the ground?

  Thanks to Kevin Loughin (KB9RLW) for this fascinating and somewhat controversial discussion of "on the ground" antennas. Kevin contends that such antennas make excellent receiving systems, but provide uncertain results in the transmit mode. Kevin's experiment works fairly well.   However, with careful attention paid to assembly and use, ground mounted antennas can often produce interesting results, especially if you use "Beverage" antennas for receiving purposes. Several decades ago, Mike Toia (K3MT) designed and used what he called a "grasswire" antenna with excellent results for both receiving and transmitting.  Google search Mike Toia (K3MT) and see what he accomplished.
