According to Anthony Gettig (N8VOX), one of the easiest, least expensive HF antennas you can make is the "classic" dipole.
All you need is a length of wire for your favorite frequency, some coaxial cable feedline, and an optional 1:1 balun.
In this video, Anthony (N8VOX) takes us step-by-step through the design, building, testing, and use phases of this basic HF antenna.
This DIY antenna can be used in the "field" as well as in your ham shack.

The dipole is the EASIEST antenna to build for HF ham radio! I made mine specifically for 30m, but you can make it one for ANY band! All you need is the coax (I get mine from Cable Experts at hamfests, but they're online too), some wire (I used 14 gauge speaker wire), and if you want to get fancy, a 1:1 balun like I use in the video. But really, if you want to skip the balun, you can just connect the center conductor of the coax to one wire and the jacket of the coax to the other and string that baby in the air! Just remember, YOU assume all risk if you try this at home. YMMV. :)

Here's an interesting antenna design for radio amateurs exploring the 630 meter and 2200 meter amateur radio bands. This classic antenna is basically a top loaded vertical designed for frequencies below the standard broadcast band (472 kHz and 137 kHz). Bernie does an excellent job of explaining the pros and cons of this popular HF antenna from the late Louis Varney (G5RV). Although Varney envisioned his design primarily as a 3/2 wavelength antenna for the 20 meter Amateur Radio band, radio amateurs have used the antenna for multiband use. The G5RV is an excellent choice for the 20 meter band. Performance on other HF Amateur Radio bands is good enough to qualify as stand alone HF antenna if you can only erect one HF antenna.
