Cheap and easy to build tilt over antenna mast.


If you live in areas plagued by storms and high winds, you may find this tilt over antenna mast from "Maverick RC" a useful addition to your antenna system.

This tilt over mast project will take some time to design and build, but it will pay for itself by saving your beam antennas from being ruined by sudden weather changes.  As a benefit, you'll be able to do basic antenna maintenance safely and in less time than before.

Here's a breakdown of the home made tilt over antenna mast that I built for my radio. The initial post is a 4x4x16 that is around 4-1/12 feet in the ground. I added roughly 9 feet on top of it to give it a total height of 20 feet. The actual metal pipe is 33 feet in length. There are multiple pieces used and the joints are staggered, being one section inside of another. There's also about 3 feet on the very top that is joined by the section's swage joint. The hinge is 8 inches total length, lag bolted to the post. There are 2 holes drilled through the pipe to allow attachment to the hinge using 1/4 inch nuts and bolts. The winch is from Tractor Supply or could be purchased from just about any big box store or hardware store. The winch holds 50 feet of 340lb working weight cable, from the winch, to the top of the wooden pole through a metal pulley, then back down to the pipe where an eye bolt attached to it. The cable is routed around the loop of the eye bolt and clamped back onto itself. If you try this setup, just make sure to get the eye bolt height as close to the top pulley height as you possibly can. If they don't line up, you'll have issues getting the pipe to lock securely to the post. I'm running an Alpha V 5/8 ground plane in this video, and have had no issues at all with this setup. I can not vouch for the dependability if you choose to run an antenna that is heavier than this one. You may have to increase the diameter of pipe that you run, as well as hinge size and maybe go with a larger wooden post. It's a simple build and I spent less than $100.00 on putting it together. I haven't had any issues at all and plan to build something similar when I put up a beam antenna. Hope this helps, and feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
