Increase the range of any handheld radio with this easy, inexpensive "tiger tail" antenna project from Hayden (VK7HH).

A small counterpoise wire attached to the antenna connection turns the inefficient "rubber duck" antenna into a more efficient antenna by supplying the "missing half" of  of the handheld's antenna.
