As the ARRL 2017 Field Day approaches (24-25 June 2017), I'll be sharing some of the fascinating portable antennas that could be used during this nation-wide emergency communications exercise. Thousands of radio amateurs in the United States and Canada will be searching for contacts using portable and emergency ham radio stations. A key element of this exercise is the antenna, which can take a variety of forms, depending on the location and materials available.
In this article from NC4FB, we learn about a simple, easily-constructed multiband HF antenna that will serve you well on several amateur radio bands. NC4FB patterns this antenna after an original design from G7FEK. According to NC4FB, the antenna is a "nested 1/4 wavelength compact Marconi antenna that fits into a space that is 46-feet/14.02 meters long and 24-feet/7.31 meters high." The antenna covers 80 through 10 meters using a 50-ohm coaxial feedline. An antenna "tuner" can be used to cover the 17, 15, 12, 10, and 6 meter amateur radio bands. The antenna uses two ground radial wires--one 66-feet/20.12 meters long and the other 33-feet/10.06 meters long. NC4FB provides a link to the original construction plans from G7FEK.
Although this antenna is designed for portable use, it can be used on urban lots where space is at a premium.
